WordPress for the Month

With the announcement of WordPress 5.6 and the introduction of Learn WordPress, we bid goodbye to 2020 in style. But in December, these weren’t the only thrilling posts from WordPress. To learn more, read on!

Here’s WordPress 5.6

On December 8, the new big WordPress update, version 5.6 “Simone,” came out. With a new default style called Twenty Twenty One, the release ships. It provides a variety of characteristics, including:

  • Greater layout flexibility
  • More block patterns
  • Video captioning support
  • Auto-updates
  • Beta-compatibility for PHP 8.0
  • Application password support for the REST API
  • Updates to jQuery

Furthermore, WordPress 5.6 is available in 55 languages today. More information about the upgrade can be found in the field guide, and you can upgrade to the new edition either from your WordPress website or directly from WordPress.org by downloading it. A total of 605 individuals from 57 different countries contributed to WordPress 5.6’s growth. @audrasjb has collected even more such numbers, highlighting what a huge community endeavor this has been-they are well worth reading!

On December 17, State of the Word 2020, the annual keynote address delivered by WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg, was first streamed online. A live Q&A from group members all around the world accompanied it. Streaming recordings can be found on YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.

Launched WordPress Learn

The new online, on-demand WordPress learning resource, Learn WordPress, was officially released on December 15. For those interested in publishing for, developing with, or contributing to WordPress, it provides seminars, lesson plans, quizzes and courses. To learn from and about each other, WordPress fans may also engage in conversation groups focused on particular topics.
