WordPress 5.7 Full Site Editing Production Kicks Off with Priority

If there is some hint of the 2020 State of the Word address, WordPress goes full steam ahead to land full web editing in 2021. This week, the 5.7 release cycle kicked off with the proposed reach concentrating on full site editing via Gutenberg. The release will be directed by Matt Mullenweg and the rest of the team leadership is still being rounded up. Bug scrubs are now ongoing for early tickets that need additional time or early checking.

Contributors to WordPress 5.7 foresee collaborating on the following features in the next release:

  • Improve WordPress Core to include new Gutenberg plugin updates
  • Gutenberg: Ship additional blocks, optimise the UI, install the theme and design tools, and begin to work on the screen of the widget
  • Continue to work on jQuery and auto-updates

In the coming weeks, we could add more things and after the end-of-Gregorian year holidays, we will reconfirm the above-proposed list,” Francesca Marano said in a planning roundup post. She said that “closing up shop” for the holidays is not the main growth, and volunteers continue to run bug scrubs and dev chats. Many who do not attend a meeting but wish to lobby for a ticket can still comment to get it included in the conversation on the dev chat agenda post.

For contributors to chart the success of full-site editing achievements, Matias Ventura produced a GitHub issue in August. As well as the ability to browse through websites, models, pieces, and know which region is active, some of the technology and UI is already in operation. There is also styling, style lines, the Question block, and the Navigation block.

To make full-site editing features coherent and ready for prime time, there are a lot of moving pieces. He stated in Ventura’s most recent progress update on the project that all the features listed are “in advanced phases” and can already be included in the Gutenberg addon.

“When it comes to ensuring a great user experience, the main obstacle to including the job in major WordPress releases are the various dependencies between each project,” Ventura said. “The immediate focus is then on finishing the milestones, stabilizing the job, and doing as much testing as possible with different types of users.”

Four launches in 2021 are expected by WordPress contributors, allowing for several chances to launch new features.
